With an annual turnover of 344 billion euros and 6.3 million employees, healthcare is one of the largest German industries. About 11 percent of all costs are already attributable to care. An interesting market for both domestic and international investors.

According to a unanimous opinion in the trade press, 10,000 new nursing homes will still be needed by 2050. Currently there are approximately 13,600 nursing homes. This corresponds to a doubling. In 2000, some 2.3 million people were in need of nursing care in 2050 5.4 million. With an average home size of 100 places, 250 homes per year are to be built in the next 40 years.

This does not take into account the substitution of new homes for old facilities which are no longer modern. The background is demographic change. An additional offer for around 600,000 people will be expected by 2020 alone. Up to this point, investments in new capacity of around EUR 16 billion are necessary throughout Germany. As of 2020, half of the German population is older than 60 years.

Health care is not only big, but also dynamic. Over the last 25 years, it has been a strong growth driver. More than 1 million new jobs were created here. The industry also has a good outlook to be an asset for innovation, growth and employment over the next 20 years. The demographic development, the medical technology progress, as well as the increasing health consciousness of the German population make the demand and the interest in health-related products and services rise.

Estimates by economic researchers predict a growth of 344 billion € to 450 billion € by 2020 for Germany. At the same time, the number of employees can rise by up to 1 million. Health is also the strongest driving force for Germany as an innovative location. The majority of the research and development activities in the IT industry, Microsystems technology, nanotechnologies, biotechnology and gene technology are aimed at health-related uses.
